  • Help against climate change
How Do Solar Panels Work?

The process itself is actually quite simple. A solar photovoltaic (PV) panel comprises numerous cells constructed from layers of semiconductor material, primarily silicon. When these materials are illuminated by light, they produce an electric current. This current can then be stored in batteries so that your home/business can use this same electric energy to run your home.

But if solar panels need to be illuminated by light, do they produce energy in the UK? The UK is not exactly known for having year-round sunshine!

Thankfully, that is not the case. Solar panels can build and store energy even on those typically dull days. These cells are not dependent on direct sunlight and can function even on overcast days.

Solar PV systems consist of multiple panels, each capable of generating approximately 355 watts of energy under strong sunlight. Standard systems typically use about ten panels to produce direct current (DC) electricity. Since household appliances run on alternating current (AC), an inverter is integrated into the system to convert DC electricity into AC. This AC electricity can power your home or be supplied back to the grid if you do not use all of the stored electricity.

Boost your usage with battery storage

Enhance your solar PV system

While solar panels on their own are a highly useful feature for any UK household, batteries can improve the experience tenfold. We highly recommend considering the addition of battery storage when installing solar PV.

By incorporating battery storage, you can store surplus solar energy for later use, whether during the evening or in the event of a power outage. With the advantage of smart tariffs, you can maximise your savings by purchasing affordable off-peak electricity and selling excess power during peak demand periods. In the right circumstances, this can reduce your energy costs massively.

If you decide to install both battery storage and solar PV simultaneously, you can benefit from the same 0% VAT rate that applies to the solar PV installation. Additionally, substantial savings can be gained through the acquisition of an all-in-one inverter/charger. Our service ensures you can get all the assistance needed to keep your home operational and fully powered for the most affordable installation and running rates.
